From: Sharon Seto Sent: Monday, October 19, 2009 11:37 AM Subject: Volunteers and Donations needed for the Cold Weather Shelter Samaritan House has been given temporary use of a building (1509 Seventh Street, next to McDonald’s) to house a homeless emergency shelter! We hope to open in mid-November, assuming we receive the required permissions and can get the site ready. We have scheduled two workdays at the building, on Saturday October 24th and Saturday November 7th from 9 am – 3 pm. If you would like to come and help, please do, and bring your tools if you have any. We need unskilled and skilled labor to clean, paint, and repair the space. The building has been unoccupied for over a decade, so it needs a lot of help, but it will be our own dedicated space, which is wonderful. We are looking for donations of supplies and equipment – if you have any of the following, please let Sharon (505-454-4206) or Naomi (505-454-4228) know and we will work to pick it up. Please circulate this among people who might be able to help: Cold Weather Shelter Wish List: Skills Wish List - plumber to check out plumbing - electrician to check out electrical system and bring up to code - heating – get the heater working - linoleum and/or tile installation - Sewing – cut down and fit sheets and blankets - Install dishwasher, washer and dryer - Carpentry to install shelving, etc. - Social workers and counselors to work with our guests Supplies Wish list Building materials - Toilets – two - Small bathroom sinks – two - Kitchen sink – one (prefer a double) - Paint – interior, flat and enamel – light colors - Linoleum floor covering – large scraps OK Lamps – floor and table - Fencing for outside yard (10’ by 10’ minimum) Appliances - Microwave oven - Commercial crock pots - two - Coffee urn for hot water - Coffee maker - 1 - Dishwasher - Refrigerator - TV - DVD player - Space heaters - Vacuum cleaner Kitchen supplies - Dishes for 20 - Mugs for 20 - Silverware for 20 - Serving bowls, platters - Glasses - Cutting knives, large spoons, tongs - Cutting boards - Dish drainer - Bucket, mop, broom Furniture - Lockers - Picnic table - Tables and chairs for 15 - Couches - Bar stools - Cupboards for storage - Book case - Single beds - Small work desk or computer hutch Other miscellaneous supplies - Padlocks and hasps for cupboards - Single sheets, blankets (or doubles that could be cut down) - Pillows - Art and wall coverings - Area rugs - Books, magazines - Movies - Games - Trash cans - First aid kit - Fire extinguisher - Plants that can survive in low light - Clothing – men’s and women’s underwear, socks, pants, sweaters, jackets, shirts, gloves, hats, scarves Last year we ran a pilot program to measure the need for a shelter in this county. We housed an average of 7 individuals per night from Thanksgiving through the end of March. Over 75 volunteers staffed the shelter. The need is out there. This year, we will be able to have a dedicated location for the shelter which will make an incredible difference. If you are interested in volunteering for an evening or night shift or helping in any other way, we welcome your assistance!
