Youth Radio - Maria Santelli: Military Recruitment and the G.I. Rights Hotline
Community Peace Radio Show #52
Date: 7 November 2009
Topic: G. I. Rights Hotline and Military Recruitment
Participant: Maria Santelli (Coordinator for "Another Side" and the NM G.I. Rights Hotline)
Host: Pat Leahan
Summary: We examine the presence of military recruiters in our high schools, the fallout from that recruitment, and the real-life effects on our young people. Maria also shares with our listeners some excellent resources (free and confidential) available for young people, active duty military, and veterans who are not getting the services promised to them. We talk about conscientious objector status, and information is available for those in the military who feel they can no longer stay in the military. We play a 10-minute DemocracyNow.org audio clip which explains how the U.S. Army is covertly recruiting students through online computer games, and the U.S. military is maintaining a very detailed database on all high school youth in the U.S. based on data collected from our high schools.
If you are a young person who is thinking about joining the military, or you have already signed up for the D.E.P. (Delayed Entry Program), or you are currently in the military and are having problems, or if you're a veteran who is not getting the benefits promised to you, this show is a must-listen. It is not anti-recruitment; it simply presents the information and resources you need to know before you go any further.
